Patients - Wellness Tips

During an illness, many children loose their appetite. Your child may not want to eat solid foods or drink sufficient fluids. Although it is important that you do not force your child to eat or drink, it is also important to prevent dehydration during an illness. One of the early signs of dehydration is low urine output. To prevent dehydration ensure that you have a fair sense of the quantity of fluids your child has consumed and his/her urine output. Consult your doctor immediately if you suspect dehydration in your child.

Always inform your doctor of any other medications your child may be taking. When 2 or more medications are being taken at the same time, there is a risk that some interactions between the medications may occur and this may cause serious side effects.

Never use an antibiotic that had been previously prescribed for another infection in your child, even though it may be the same antibiotic

Never use one child’s antibiotic for his/her siblings.

Always complete the entire duration of treatment for Suprax® and all other antibiotics even though your child may feel better after only a few doses. Full treatment ensures that the bacteria causing the infection are eradicated and reduces the likelihood that the bacteria will develop resistance to antibiotics in the future.

Call your doctor if the symptoms of your child’s infection are not responding or getting worse despite the treatment. Also call your doctor if your child develops any adverse reaction that your doctor may not have told you about.

You can reduce the chances of catching an infection in the future. Most bacterial and viral infections spread by close contact with other children or adults who may have these conditions. Although contact with others who may have infections cannot be practically controlled in a child, simple measures such as frequent handwashing, avoiding overcrowded situations and preventing exposure to passive smoking may lower the risk of catching infections.
